On the banks of the Kshipra, Shri Mangalnath Mandir is revered as the birthplace of Mangal (Mars). Devotees come here from across India and abroad for Mangal Dosh shanti, Bhat Puja and Lord Shiva’s darshan as Mangalnath.
According to the Matsya Purana, a drop of Lord Shiva’s sweat fell on the banks of the Kshipra during his battle with the demon Andhakasura. From it Mangal, the red planet, was born, and a Shivling appeared at the spot. Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Mangalnath, the lord of Mangal, which is why the temple is so important for Mangal shanti.
The temple is open daily from early morning into the evening, and pujas are usually performed in the morning and early afternoon. Timings can change on festival days, so please confirm locally before you go.
Morning is the best time for darshan and for pujas such as Bhat Puja and Mangal Dosh shanti.
Tuesday (Mangalwar) is Mangal’s day and the most auspicious, and also the busiest. Arrive early to avoid long queues.

Mangalnath Temple Ujjain is a Shiva temple overlooking the Kshipra, also written as Shipra. The District Ujjain tourism page explains its traditional association with the birthplace of Mangal, or Mars, according to the Matsya Purana. This is a religious belief within the temple’s tradition.
Confirm the current opening hours, ritual breaks and entry arrangements locally before travelling. The official district overview describes the temple and its setting but does not provide a dependable daily timetable. We therefore do not present an unverified fixed opening-and-closing schedule.
Tuesday has particular devotional importance in Mangal worship. If your visit is tied to a specific puja, confirm the reporting time with the person coordinating the ritual and leave space for waiting. A suggested puja time is not a guarantee of immediate darshan.
A temple visit and a planned ritual are different experiences. For darshan, follow the shrine’s current entry and offering rules. For a puja, clarify the ritual’s purpose, location, participation, duration and inclusions before confirming arrangements.
Devotees traditionally associate Mangalnath with worship connected to Mangal. To understand a ritual in more detail, read our Mangal Dosh puja service information. Religious practices are matters of faith; the performance of a ritual does not guarantee a particular marriage, health or financial outcome.
The temple stands beside the Kshipra, away from the busiest central temple area. Confirm your exact drop-off point with your driver, including the walking distance and return transport. Do not rely on a fixed travel time during festivals or heavy traffic.
The district tourism page identifies Indore’s Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport as the nearby airport and Ujjain Junction (UJN) as the city’s railway station. Check current travel services independently and leave a buffer between your temple visit and departure.
For a longer stay, combine Mangalnath with a separately planned visit to Sandipani Ashram and other suitable stops. Our Ujjain temple tour guide offers a flexible two-day framework. Read the Mahakaleshwar darshan guide when planning your central-city visit.
Check steps, walking surfaces, seating and assistance before fixing the visit. Carry drinking water where permitted, use comfortable footwear for the journey and keep a clear meeting point. Follow the temple’s instructions on photography, footwear and offerings.
The district tourism description identifies Mahadev, or Shiva, as the deity worshipped here, alongside the site’s traditional association with Mangal.
Do not treat a private ritual arrangement as the same as a general temple visit. Confirm the current darshan rules with the temple and discuss a specific puja separately if you want one.
Yes, they can be planned during the same stay. Leave enough time for travel and queues, and avoid promising back-to-back entry times without confirmed arrangements.
Contact Ujjain Puja Seva with your preferred date and the ritual you want to understand. Our team can explain the proposed arrangements and inclusions.
